Upwork Fee Calculator

Upwork replaced its old tiered fee system in May 2025. There's no more lifetime-billing threshold, instead, Upwork shows you a variable service fee (0-15%) before you submit each proposal, and that rate is locked in for the life of that contract. Enter your rate to see your real payout.

Upwork shows your exact rate before you submit a proposal, it's not published as one universal number. It varies by contract, category, and Upwork's own algorithm. 10% is what most freelancers report paying most often.

Upwork changed how its fee works in 2025 - most guides you'll find are outdated

For years, Upwork charged freelancers on a sliding scale tied to how much they'd billed a specific client over time: 20% on the first $500, 10% up to $10,000, then 5% above that. As of May 1, 2025, that entire system is gone. If you're reading a guide that still describes the 20/10/5 tiers, it's describing a fee structure Upwork no longer uses.

How the current fee works

Upwork now charges a variable service fee, somewhere between 0% and 15%, determined per contract at the time you submit a proposal. You see the exact rate before you apply, and once you accept the contract, that rate is locked in for its duration, it won't change partway through. Upwork doesn't publish the exact formula behind the rate, but real freelancer reports consistently put the typical rate around 10% for most contracts.

Who this change helped, and who it didn't

New freelancers, and anyone starting a relationship with a new client, generally come out ahead: their first $500 with a client now costs roughly 10% instead of the old 20%. Established freelancers who'd built up $10,000+ in lifetime billings with a single client lost out, that portion used to cost just 5%, and now sits closer to 10%.

Connects still cost money too

Submitting a proposal on most contracts costs Connects, priced at $0.15 each, separate from the service fee taken once you're paid. Some Project Catalog fixed-scope listings are Connects-free. If you're bidding heavily without winning much, Connects spend can add up before you've earned a cent.

Fee rates are kept current but can change without notice, and your specific rate is set by Upwork per contract, not a fixed platform-wide number. Always confirm your exact rate on the proposal screen before submitting. This tool provides estimates only and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Upwork.
