PayPal's rate depends on the transaction type, personal payments funded by balance or bank are usually free, but any commercial payment for goods or services carries a real fee. Here's the standard rate this calculator uses.
This is PayPal's standard published rate for a domestic US commercial payment, whether it comes through PayPal Checkout, a hosted button, or an invoice. The flat $0.49 component hits small transactions hardest, on a $5 sale, that fee alone is nearly 10% before the percentage applies.
If the buyer is outside the US, PayPal adds roughly 1.5 percentage points on top of the domestic rate. Currency conversion, if the payment isn't already in your account's currency, adds a further spread on top of that, typically 3-4%, which this calculator doesn't include since it depends on the specific currency pair.
PayPal's QR code / in-person rate (2.29% + $0.09) and its micropayments rate (4.99% + $0.09, for very small sales) are both meaningfully cheaper than the standard rate in the right situation, if either applies to how you get paid, they're worth switching to.
Fee rates are kept current but can change without notice, and vary by country and payment product. Always confirm current rates in your PayPal account before making pricing decisions. This tool provides estimates only and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by PayPal.
